17 Years Ago Today....

Me and More than 250,000 of my fellow South Floridians became Homeless.

I was 9 years old
.
I remember everything about that day.
I will NEVER forget that day.

I went to having everything i wanted to nothing at all in less then 24 hours.
I saw my parents helpless.
I saw people at their rawest.
I saw people looting.
I saw people giving.
I saw devastation.
I ate Red Cross hot meals for more then 2 weeks.
My parents took turns keeping watch all night with a .357 in thier hand.

That day changed my life forever.

Wow, that's crazy. I was 18 and lucky for me, although we had no electricity for weeks our house was intact.

I just came across your blog and read this post.

Your words sound exactly like what happened to my husband (and probably thousands of other South Floridians). He, too, remembers the day as if it was yesterday. The looting, the giving, the eating meals at a local Church, and the night watches with a shotgun.

I think our community should remember this more, and remember that it can unite us, and that -- TOGETHER -- we survived.

I remember this. I was 14. I got my first job cleaning the completely destroyed bloomingdales at the falls. Thursday: lung at 1PM Corey meeting at 2:30 PMWe had to separate the wet, moldy clothing randomly into different boxes labeled 1, 2, and 3. At 10$ an hour I was a happy 14 year old.

Luckily my house was one of 120 that survived Andrew. We still had no electricity for a couple of weeks. I will never forget that time in my life.

That was surely a difficult time and no doubt you will always remember it so profoundly.

Loss makes us look at life differently.

My parents were in prison camps during WWII talked to me about loss, as a child I couldn't even comprehend any of it.

What has become more important to you since that expereince?
